You're sitting outside on a warm, still summer evening when the horizon flickers. A soft pulse of light rolls across the distant sky, then another โ but no thunder ever comes. The air feels calm, the stars might even be out overhead. This silent light show has a folk name that has stuck for generations: heat lightning.
It's one of the most misunderstood things in the night sky. Despite the name, heat lightning is not a special kind of lightning caused by heat, and it isn't harmless "summer static" in the air. It's ordinary lightning from a real thunderstorm โ one that's simply too far away for you to hear.
Every bolt of heat lightning is a normal cloud-to-ground or cloud-to-cloud discharge inside a thunderstorm. The reason you see the flash but hear nothing is pure distance. Light travels to your eyes almost instantly and can bounce off high clouds and haze from a storm 100 miles (160 km) or more away. Sound is far slower and far weaker โ thunder rarely carries beyond about 10 to 15 miles (16 to 24 km) before the atmosphere absorbs and scatters it into silence.
So when a storm is sitting over the next county โ or beyond the curve of the horizon entirely โ its lightning can still light up your sky while its thunder never reaches you. The "heat" association comes only from the fact that these distant storms are most common on warm, humid summer nights, exactly when you're likely to be outside noticing the sky.
Thunder is the sound of air exploding outward from a lightning channel that's suddenly heated to around 50,000ยฐF (27,760ยฐC). Up close it's a deafening crack. But sound waves lose energy fast as they spread, and the atmosphere works against them in other ways too. Warm air near the ground bends sound waves upward, so thunder from a distant storm gets refracted over your head and back into the sky rather than reaching your ears. Between simple distance and this bending effect, a storm only 20 or 30 miles off can be completely silent.
The flashes you're watching are not a threat by themselves โ the storm producing them is far too distant to strike you. But heat lightning is a genuinely useful warning sign. It tells you an active thunderstorm exists nearby, and storms move. If the flashes are growing brighter, more frequent, or starting to be followed by faint rumbles, the storm is heading your way and it's time to think about getting indoors.
If you can hear thunder, there's a simple way to estimate the distance to a strike. Count the seconds between the flash and the bang, then divide by five for miles (or by three for kilometers). Five seconds means the bolt was about one mile (1.6 km) away. With true heat lightning you never hear the thunder at all, which is your clue that the storm is well over 10 miles off โ but keep watching, because that number can shrink quickly.

The biggest myth is that heat lightning is caused by heat alone, with no storm involved โ that hot, humid air somehow "discharges" on its own. That doesn't happen; there is always a thunderstorm somewhere producing those bolts. Another myth is that it's a totally separate weather phenomenon. It isn't. It's the exact same lightning you'd see overhead in a nearby storm, just viewed from far enough away that the sound is gone and only the glow remains.
Heat lightning is simply distant lightning โ real bolts from a real thunderstorm too far off for its thunder to reach you. The warm nights it appears on gave it its misleading name, but there's nothing mysterious about it. Enjoy the silent light show if the storm is far away, and treat brightening flashes or the first rumble of thunder as your cue to head inside.
