Thunder and lightning always arrive together, but they reach you in very different ways. The flash is over in an instant; the boom that follows can rattle windows seconds later. That gap between them isn't random โ it's a built-in distance meter you can read with nothing but a stopwatch and a little counting. To use it, though, it helps to understand what actually makes the sound in the first place.
Lightning is a colossal electrical spark โ a sudden discharge that can carry tens of thousands of amps. In the few millionths of a second it takes to flash, it heats the narrow channel of air it travels through to roughly 50,000ยฐF (about 28,000ยฐC), which is several times hotter than the surface of the Sun. Air that hot expands explosively, slamming outward faster than the speed of sound and creating a shockwave. That shockwave decays into the sound wave we hear as thunder. In short: thunder is the sound of air violently exploding away from a lightning bolt.
If lightning is so quick, why does thunder sometimes roll on for several seconds? Because a lightning channel is miles long, and different parts of it are different distances from your ears. The sound from the nearest section reaches you first, and sound from the farther sections arrives later, smearing one event into a drawn-out rumble. A nearby strike, where the whole channel is about the same distance away, sounds like a single sharp crack or bang instead.
The method is simple. When you see a lightning flash, start counting seconds until you hear the thunder, then do the math:

The rule of thumb: divide the number of seconds by 5 to get miles (or by 3 to get kilometers). So if you count 15 seconds between the flash and the bang, the lightning struck roughly 3 miles (about 5 km) away. Count again on the next flash โ if the gap is shrinking, the storm is moving toward you.
This counting trick is more than a party fact โ it's a safety tool. The widely taught 30/30 rule says: if you count 30 seconds or less between the flash and the thunder, the lightning is close enough (within about 6 miles / 10 km) to be a threat, and you should already be indoors. Then wait 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder before heading back outside, because lightning can strike well away from the storm's rain.
Distant flashes with no audible boom are often called "heat lightning," but there's no such thing as silent lightning. It's simply a normal thunderstorm so far away โ often more than 10 to 15 miles (16 to 24 km) โ that the thunder has faded or bent upward in the atmosphere before reaching you. The lightning is real; you're just out of earshot of its sound.
Thunder is the sound of air explosively heated by a lightning bolt to tens of thousands of degrees, expanding into a shockwave. Because light reaches you instantly but sound crawls along at about a mile every 5 seconds, the delay between flash and boom tells you how far away the strike was โ just divide the seconds by 5 for miles, or 3 for kilometers. And if that number is 30 or less, the safest place to do your counting is inside.
