You've felt it before: a hot, still summer afternoon, a dark storm building in the distance, and then โ before a single raindrop falls โ a sudden blast of cool wind kicks up, sending leaves and dust flying and dropping the temperature 10 or 15 degrees in a minute. That rush of cool air charging out ahead of a thunderstorm is a gust front, and it's one of the most reliable warnings that stronger weather is about to arrive.
The gust front is the storm's advance guard. Learning to recognize it gives you crucial minutes to get indoors before the rain, lightning, and potentially damaging winds hit.
A gust front is the boundary between a thunderstorm's cool downdraft and the warm air ahead of it. It all starts with rain-cooled air sinking out of the storm:

The pool of cool air spreading out from the storm is called the outflow, and the gust front is simply its leading edge. Because cool air is denser than the warm air it's plowing into, it acts like a miniature cold front โ wedging under the warm air and shoving it upward. That lifting can even trigger new storms along the boundary. The temperature drop, wind shift, and pressure jump you feel are all signs the gust front has passed over you. It's closely related to the powerful straight-line winds behind a derecho and the small-scale but violent microburst.
Gust fronts are more than a refreshing breeze. The winds along a strong one can reach 40 to 60 mph (64 to 97 km/h) or higher โ enough to snap branches, topple weak trees, blow over tents and canopies, and create hazards for boaters caught on open water. Because the wind arrives suddenly and before the rain, it often catches people off guard at outdoor events, campgrounds, and beaches while skies overhead may still look bright.
Gust fronts also loft dust and lower visibility, and in dry regions they can kick up a full-blown dust storm. The rapid wind shift is a serious concern for aviation, one of the reasons airports monitor for the wind shear that gust fronts and microbursts produce near the runway.
The two sound similar and behave alike, but they're different in scale. A cold front is a large-scale boundary that can stretch hundreds of miles and takes hours to pass, driven by big weather systems. A gust front is a small, short-lived, storm-scale feature โ it's produced by a single thunderstorm or cluster and typically passes in minutes. Both bring a wind shift, a temperature drop, and a pressure change, but the gust front is the storm's own local outflow, not a system-wide air mass change.
