Few weather events look as much like the end of the world as a haboob. One moment the desert sky is clear; the next, a churning brown wall thousands of feet tall is rolling across the horizon, blotting out the sun and swallowing entire neighborhoods in a matter of minutes. Drivers on Phoenix freeways have watched these dust storms turn a bright afternoon into near-total darkness almost instantly. It's dramatic, it's disorienting β and it's surprisingly well understood.
The word "haboob" comes from the Arabic habΕ«b, meaning "blasting" or "drifting." Though the term originated in Sudan and the Sahara, the same phenomenon strikes the American Southwest most summers, and on our Phoenix forecast page we mention them by name. Here's what's actually happening when one bears down on a city.
A haboob is an intense dust or sand storm driven by the powerful winds flowing out of a collapsing thunderstorm. The defining feature is its shape: a dense, rolling wall of dust that can stand 3,000 to 5,000 feet tall β sometimes higher β and stretch 50 to 100 miles wide. It advances as a single, well-defined front rather than a gradual haze, which is what makes it look so much like a solid wall sweeping across the land.
What sets a haboob apart from ordinary blowing dust is its origin. It isn't simply wind picking up loose dirt over time. It's born from a thunderstorm β specifically from the storm's powerful downdraft β which is why haboobs arrive suddenly, hit hard, and pass within an hour or so.
The recipe is a thunderstorm meeting dry, dusty ground. Here's the chain of events:
1. A thunderstorm builds and then collapses. As a storm matures, rain and hail begin to fall. In the dry desert air, much of that rain evaporates before it reaches the ground β a process that violently cools the surrounding air.
2. Cold air crashes downward. That cooled air is denser and heavier than its surroundings, so it plunges toward the ground as a powerful downdraft, sometimes called a downburst. When it slams into the surface, it has nowhere to go but outward.
3. A wall of wind races outward. This rush of air spreading out ahead of the storm is the gust front, or outflow boundary. Winds can hit 40 to 60 mph (64 to 97 km/h) β fast enough to lift enormous quantities of loose desert dust into the air all at once.
4. The dust becomes a moving wall. The leading edge of that outflow scoops up dust and rolls it forward into the towering, churning front we recognize as a haboob.
Haboobs need two ingredients: a source of dry, loose dust and thunderstorms to generate the winds. That combination is most common in arid and semi-arid regions. Around the world, the classic haboob zones are the Sahara, the Arabian Peninsula, and parts of the Middle East.
In the United States, the Desert Southwest is the haboob capital β especially Arizona's Sonoran Desert. Phoenix and Tucson see several each year, overwhelmingly during the summer monsoon season from roughly mid-June through September, when humid air surges north and fuels afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Parts of New Mexico, west Texas, and the southern High Plains get them too.

For all their beauty from a distance, haboobs are genuinely hazardous up close. The biggest danger is on the road. Visibility can drop to near zero in seconds, causing massive multi-car pileups on highways when drivers can't see the vehicles ahead. Arizona freeways have seen deadly chain-reaction crashes triggered by exactly this.
Beyond driving, the airborne dust is a serious health concern. It can trigger asthma attacks and breathing problems, and β much like a high-pollution day β it sends the Air Quality Index soaring as fine particles flood the air. The dust can also carry fungal spores that cause Valley Fever, a respiratory illness found in the Southwest's soil. On top of that, the strong gust front winds can down power lines, topple trees, and damage property in their own right.
Because haboobs are tied to thunderstorms, your forecast gives you warning. During monsoon season, watch for thunderstorm activity and dust storm warnings, which the National Weather Service issues when one is approaching.
If you're driving: Don't try to outrun it. Exit the highway if you safely can, or pull far off the road and follow the "lights off, foot off the brake" rule above.
If you're indoors: Close all windows and doors, and if you have respiratory issues, run an air purifier and avoid going outside until the dust clears.
If you're caught outside: Cover your nose and mouth with a cloth or mask to avoid inhaling dust, and seek solid shelter. Protect your eyes from the stinging, fast-moving particles.
A haboob is one of nature's most cinematic weather events: a mile-high wall of dust kicked up by the winds blasting out of a collapsing thunderstorm. They're a summer staple of the Desert Southwest, beautiful from afar but dangerous up close β especially on the highway. Understand that the dust is really a visible gust front, respect the warnings during monsoon season, and know what to do if one rolls in, and you'll appreciate the spectacle without becoming a statistic.
