Cross a hot parking lot or a dry field on a blazing summer afternoon and you might see it: a slender, spinning column of dust rising off the ground, dancing across the surface before it wobbles and vanishes. That's a dust devil โ a small, fast-rotating whirlwind made visible only by the dirt, sand, and litter it sweeps up. Unlike a tornado, a dust devil forms out of a clear blue sky on calm, sunny days, and it has nothing to do with a thunderstorm.
Dust devils are common in deserts and dry, open country, but they can appear almost anywhere the ground gets hot enough. Most are harmless curiosities โ but the biggest ones deserve respect.
Dust devils are born from intense surface heating, not from storms. The recipe is simple: clear skies, light winds, and ground that heats up fast. Here's the sequence:

The key difference from a tornado is where the spin comes from. A tornado descends from a rotating supercell thunderstorm and builds from the cloud down. A dust devil builds from the ground up, driven purely by heat rising off a hot surface. That's why you see dust devils on the calmest, sunniest days โ exactly the opposite conditions from a tornado. The same rising-air physics is why you feel shimmering heat and why surface temperatures can run far hotter than the official air reading.
Most dust devils are small and short-lived โ a few feet wide, 100 to 300 feet (30 to 90 m) tall, lasting under a minute with winds around 45 mph (72 km/h) or less. These will toss some leaves and grit in your face but do no real harm. However, in very hot, arid regions, dust devils can grow surprisingly large: up to 300 feet (90 m) wide and half a mile (800 m) tall, with winds topping 60 mph (97 km/h) and lifetimes of 20 minutes or more.
The large ones can knock down flimsy structures, flip light trailers, damage tents and canopies, and have caused injuries and even rare deaths at fairs and construction sites. They're a known hazard for small aircraft and gliders near the ground, and they can briefly kick up enough dust to cut visibility for drivers.
Dust devils favor hot, dry, sparsely vegetated terrain: deserts of the American Southwest, Australia, the Middle East, and North Africa, plus dry farm fields, dirt lots, and construction sites elsewhere. They peak in the early-to-mid afternoon when the ground is hottest and the sky is clear, and they fade quickly once clouds move in or the sun gets low.
