Silicon Valley's sunny rain shadow

Just 50 miles south of foggy San Francisco, San Jose enjoys a sunnier, warmer, and drier climate β€” a Mediterranean pattern sheltered in the Santa Clara Valley. The Santa Cruz Mountains to the west cast a rain shadow that wrings moisture out of incoming Pacific storms, making San Jose one of the driest major cities in California and a big reason the South Bay gets so much sunshine.

Warm, bone-dry summers

Summers are warm and reliably rainless, with July highs in the low-to-mid 80sΒ°F (around 28–30Β°C). The valley is far enough from the coast to escape San Francisco's chill but close enough that evening sea breezes usually cool things off after dark. It rarely gets dangerously hot, though heat waves can push past 100Β°F (38Β°C).

Mild winters

Winters are gentle, with highs around 60Β°F (16Β°C), occasional frost on the coldest nights, and the season's modest rainfall. The valley can trap fog and haze under winter inversions, but hard freezes are rare.

San Jose collects only about 15 inches (380 mm) of rain a year, almost entirely in winter, and enjoys roughly 300 sunny days β€” among the most agreeable, low-drama climates in the state.

The Valley of Heart's Delight rain shadow

San Jose sits in a rain shadow at the south end of San Francisco Bay, sheltered by the Santa Cruz Mountains, making it one of the driest and sunniest spots in coastal California β€” it averages barely 15 inches (380 mm) of rain a year.

The same hills that block rain also block the coast's cold fog, so San Jose runs a few degrees warmer and clearer than San Francisco just 45 miles north. Summers are dry and mild, winters gentle, and the famously stable weather is part of why the valley became such comfortable year-round terrain.
