Hot valley days, cool Delta nights

Sacramento sits in the heart of California's Central Valley, and its climate is a classic inland Mediterranean: intensely hot, dry summers and mild, foggy winters. Far from the ocean's direct influence, the city swings between extremes the coast never sees β€” but it has one reliable trick up its sleeve to cool the evenings.

The Delta Breeze

On many summer afternoons, as the valley heats up, a flow of cooler marine air funnels in through the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta from San Francisco Bay. This "Delta Breeze" can drop nighttime temperatures dramatically, turning a 100Β°F (38Β°C) afternoon into a pleasant evening. When it fails to arrive, heat waves can be brutal β€” the record high is 116Β°F (47Β°C).

Tule fog winters

Winters are cool and damp, with highs in the upper 50sΒ°F (around 14Β°C). The valley's signature cold-season hazard is tule fog β€” a dense, ground-hugging fog that forms on still winter nights and can cut visibility to near zero, historically a major cause of road accidents.

Sacramento receives about 18 inches (460 mm) of rain a year, concentrated almost entirely in the winter months, with summers that can go for months without a single drop.

Delta breeze and Tule fog

Sacramento has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate with a reliable escape valve: the 'Delta breeze,' cool marine air that funnels up from San Francisco Bay in the evening, often dropping triple-digit afternoons into the pleasant 70sΒ°F (low 20sΒ°C) overnight.

Winter brings its own signature β€” Tule fog, a dense ground fog that settles in the Central Valley for days, cutting visibility and historically causing major pileups on the highways. Rain falls almost entirely in the winter months, while summers pass with essentially no precipitation at all.
