Louisville sits in the Ohio River valley on the border between the humid subtropical South and the humid continental Midwest, and it leans warm and muggy. The river valley traps heat and humidity in summer and pools cold air and fog in winter, giving the city a sticky warm season and a changeable, sometimes icy cold one.

The dense urban core makes Louisville one of the faster-warming heat islands in the country, and afternoon thunderstorms are frequent.

Winters are cold but milder than the upper Midwest, with January highs around 43°F (6°C). The city sits near the rain–snow line, so winter precipitation can swing between snow, rain, and disruptive ice. Come early May, the famous Kentucky Derby is at the mercy of spring's volatility — anything from warm sunshine to cold, drenching rain.

Louisville averages about 45 inches (1,140 mm) of rain a year, with spring the wettest season. Autumn brings comfortable warmth, cool nights, and the valley's clearest skies.
