Crossroads weather, storms included

Indianapolis sits on flat ground in central Indiana — the self-styled "Crossroads of America" — with a humid continental climate and nothing in the surrounding landscape to deflect the weather. That openness makes the region a regular target for the clashing air masses that produce severe thunderstorms, while still delivering four clearly distinct seasons.

Severe spring and summer storms

From spring into summer, warm, humid Gulf air collides with cooler systems from the north over Indiana's flat terrain, spawning thunderstorms that can bring damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes. The state lies on the eastern edge of the nation's tornado-prone zone, and severe-weather watches are a routine part of the warm season.

Cold winters, hot summers

Winters are cold and often gray, with January highs in the upper 30s°F (around 3°C) and moderate snowfall, occasionally punctuated by disruptive ice storms. Summers are hot and humid, with July highs in the mid-80s°F (around 29°C) and the heat index climbing higher when Gulf moisture surges north.

Indianapolis averages about 42 inches (1,070 mm) of precipitation a year, with the wettest months in spring. Autumn is the calm reward — crisp, colorful, and settled after the stormy warm season.

Open to every air mass

Sitting on flat ground in the middle of the country, Indianapolis has no mountains or lakes nearby to buffer it, so it takes the full swing of continental extremes — humid Gulf summers and cold Canadian winters, sometimes within the same week.

This exposure makes it prime severe-weather country: spring and early summer bring supercell thunderstorms, damaging wind, and tornado watches. Winter delivers everything from clipper snows to ice storms. The lack of terrain also means wind sweeps across the region freely, and temperature swings of 30°F (17°C) in a day are not unusual.
