Two seasons, endless summer

Honolulu, on the south shore of Oahu, has some of the most stable weather on the planet. The temperature barely moves: daytime highs run around 80°F (27°C) in the coolest month and 89°F (32°C) in the warmest, and the city has never officially recorded a temperature below 52°F (11°C) or above 95°F (35°C) in over 70 years of records. Because there's no real cold season, Hawaiians don't count winter and summer — they speak of just two seasons: Kau, the warm dry season, and Hoʻoilo, the cooler wet season.

The trade winds run everything

The secret to Honolulu's comfort is the northeasterly trade winds, which blow steadily for most of the year. They sweep humidity and heat away and keep the air fresh even when the sun is strong. On the rare days the trades stop — replaced by humid, hazy "Kona winds" from the south — locals feel it immediately: the air turns sticky and still, and that's often when the islands import volcanic haze, or "vog," from the active volcanoes on the Big Island.

Wet side, dry side: a few miles apart

Oahu is a study in microclimates. As the trade winds hit the Koʻolau mountains behind the city, the air is forced upward, cools, and dumps its rain on the windward (northeast) side — which is why those slopes are lush, green, and threaded with waterfalls. Honolulu itself sits on the leeward (southwest) side, in the mountains' rain shadow, so it stays comparatively sunny and dry. You can drive from a downpour to brilliant sunshine in fifteen minutes. Rainbows are so common that they appear on Hawaii's license plates.

When the weather does turn

The wet season, roughly November through April, brings most of the year's rain — usually as brief overnight showers, but occasionally as heavy storms that flood streets and send red mud into the sea. Winter is also high-surf season, when North Pacific swells drive the legendary giant waves on Oahu's North Shore (Honolulu's south-facing beaches stay calmer). Hawaii's true wildcard is hurricane season, from June through November: direct hits are rare thanks to cool surrounding waters, but near-misses like Hurricane Lane in 2018 are a regular reminder to stay prepared. Year-round, the tropical sun is intense — UV levels stay high even on cloudy days.
