Sunshine, southerly busters, and summer storms

Sydney has a mild, humid temperate climate that lets its harbor-side outdoor life run all year. Summers are warm and humid, winters are cool but rarely cold, and rain falls in every season — typically as heavy bursts rather than steady drizzle. Being in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons run opposite to the north: summer spans December to February.

Warm, humid summers

Summers are warm and sticky, with January highs around 79°F (26°C), eased by sea breezes off the Pacific. Heat waves driven by hot winds from the interior can push temperatures past 104°F (40°C), and the dry, hot conditions also raise the risk of bushfires, whose smoke occasionally shrouds the city. Afternoon thunderstorms are common.

The "southerly buster" and mild winters

A distinctive local feature is the "southerly buster" — an abrupt blast of cool southerly wind that can sweep up the coast on a hot summer afternoon, dropping the temperature dramatically within minutes. Winters are mild and often sunny, with July highs around 63°F (17°C); frost and snow are essentially unknown in the city.

Sydney is fairly wet, averaging about 47 inches (1,200 mm) of rain a year, with a slight autumn peak. The wettest spells can bring intense downpours and flooding, but the climate's overall mildness and sunshine are what define life here.

Southern-hemisphere seasons and southerly busters

Sydney's humid subtropical climate brings warm, humid summers (December to February) and mild winters, with the seasons flipped from the northern hemisphere. Summer heat can spike viciously when hot desert air blows in from the interior, sometimes topping 104°F (40°C) before a dramatic change.

That change is the 'southerly buster,' a sudden cool wind surging up the coast that can crash the temperature by 20°F (11°C) in minutes. Rainfall peaks in autumn and can arrive as intense coastal downpours, while winters are mild, sunny, and dry. The sea breeze keeps the coast comfortable through the hottest months.
