Piedmont seasons and the Carolina wedge

Charlotte sits in the rolling Piedmont of North Carolina, midway between the mountains and the coast, with a humid subtropical climate that delivers four pleasant, distinct seasons. Hot summers and mild winters are the norm, but the region has one tricky cold-season specialty driven by the Appalachians to its west.

Cold-air damming — the "wedge"

When cold air gets trapped against the eastern slopes of the Appalachians, a shallow "wedge" of chilly air slides over the Piedmont while milder air rides above it. This setup, known as cold-air damming, is Charlotte's classic recipe for disruptive ice and freezing rain — often the difference between a quiet rain and a city-stopping glaze.

Hot summers, mild winters

Summers are hot and humid, with July highs around 90°F (32°C) and regular afternoon thunderstorms. Winters are mild and short, with January highs in the low 50s°F (around 11°C); snow is infrequent and usually light, melting quickly.

Charlotte averages about 43 inches (1,090 mm) of rain a year, fairly evenly distributed, with a slight summer peak from thunderstorms. Inland tropical remnants in late summer can also bring heavy rain. Spring and fall are long, green, and comfortable.

Piedmont heat and ice-storm winters

Charlotte's inland Piedmont setting gives it long, humid summers with July highs near 90°F (32°C) and frequent afternoon thunderstorms rolling off the Appalachians to the west. The city rarely gets a true sea breeze, so summer humidity lingers.

Winter's signature threat isn't snow but freezing rain: cold air damming against the mountains lets warm, moist air ride over the top, glazing roads with ice. These events are brief but can paralyze the region. Decaying tropical systems from the Gulf or Atlantic also swing through in late summer, dumping heavy rain.
