Your body has one main defense against heat: sweating. As sweat evaporates off your skin, it carries heat away and cools you down. But that cooling only works if the surrounding air is dry enough to accept more moisture. When the air is already saturated, sweat can't evaporate — and your built-in air conditioning fails. Wet-bulb temperature is the single number that tells you how close you are to that point.
It's one of the most important — and least understood — measurements in weather, and as heat waves intensify, it's becoming a number worth knowing.
Wet-bulb temperature is, quite literally, the temperature you get from a thermometer with a wet cloth wrapped around its bulb, exposed to moving air. As water evaporates off the cloth, it cools the thermometer — exactly the way evaporating sweat cools your skin. The drier the air, the more evaporation happens and the lower the reading drops below the actual air temperature.
In dry desert air, the wet-bulb temperature can be 20–30°F (11–17°C) below the regular ("dry-bulb") temperature. In humid, tropical air, evaporation barely happens, so the two readings sit close together. That gap is the information: it tells you how much cooling power the air can still give your body.
Your core body temperature sits around 98.6°F (37°C). To shed heat, your skin needs to stay cooler than your core, and sweating is what keeps it there. Scientists long held that a sustained wet-bulb temperature of 95°F (35°C) is the theoretical limit a healthy human can survive — at that point the air is so hot and humid that sweat no longer evaporates and the body simply cannot cool itself, no matter how much water you drink or how still you stay.
Recent research suggests the real danger limit may be even lower — closer to a wet-bulb of 87°F (31°C) for many people, especially the elderly, the very young, and those with health conditions. The takeaway is the same: long before the air temperature looks catastrophic, high humidity can push conditions past what the body can handle.

A dry 110°F day in Phoenix may have a wet-bulb temperature in the mid-70s°F (low 20s°C) — uncomfortable, but survivable, because sweat evaporates freely. A muggy 95°F (35°C) day with very high humidity along a coast can have a far more dangerous wet-bulb reading, because there's nowhere for your sweat to go.
True wet-bulb temperatures near the 95°F (35°C) limit are still rare, but they have already been recorded briefly in spots along the Persian Gulf, in South Asia, and in parts of the coastal subtropics — usually where intense heat meets ocean humidity. As global temperatures climb, climate scientists expect these episodes to become more frequent and to spread to more regions, which is why wet-bulb temperature has moved from an obscure lab term to a headline metric during major heat domes.
Wet-bulb temperature folds heat and humidity into one honest number: how well your body can still cool itself. Once it climbs toward 95°F (35°C) — and for many people, well before that — sweating stops working and even a healthy person at rest is in danger. It's a reminder that on the most humid days, it's not just the temperature on the thermometer that counts, but how much moisture is already in the air.
