What Is Virga? The Rain That Never Reaches the Ground

Look toward the horizon on a warm, dry afternoon and you may see it: gray, wispy streaks trailing down from the bottom of a cloud like a jellyfish's tentacles or the frayed hem of a curtain โ€” but never quite touching the ground. That's virga, and it's one of the most beautiful and misunderstood sights in the sky. It's genuinely raining (or snowing) up there. The precipitation just evaporates on the way down and vanishes before it lands.

The word comes from the Latin for "rod" or "streak," and once you learn to spot virga you'll see it constantly, especially in dry climates and mountain regions. But beyond the beauty, virga is a signal of what the air near the ground is doing โ€” and in some cases it's a warning to pilots.

How Virga Forms

Virga happens when rain or snow falls out of a cloud into a layer of dry air below. Water evaporates faster in dry air, so as the droplets fall through that parched layer, they shrink and shrink until they disappear entirely. If the dry layer is deep enough and the drops are small enough, none of the precipitation survives the trip to the surface.

This is why virga is so common in arid regions like the desert Southwest, the high plains, and the interior West โ€” the air near the ground is often bone-dry even when clouds overhead are producing rain. The same thing happens in winter with snow, which can sublimate (turn straight from ice to vapor) before reaching the ground. When precipitation does make it all the way down, meteorologists call it praecipitatio; when it evaporates first, it's virga.

So a beautiful curtain of virga hanging beneath a building thunderstorm can be a red flag that dangerous winds may follow.

Virga and Humidity

The key ingredient behind virga is a big gap between the temperature and the dew point near the ground โ€” meteorologists call this a "dry lower atmosphere." The larger that gap, the more aggressively falling rain evaporates and the higher above the surface it disappears. That's why humid coastal areas rarely see dramatic virga, while dry inland and mountain locations see it almost daily in the warm season.
