Supercells often ride ahead of a squall line as isolated cells before the main line arrives, which is why a severe weather day can start with scattered storms and end with the whole sky closing off into one advancing front.

How to Stay Safe

The good news is that squall lines are highly predictable โ€” you can usually see them coming hours out on radar. When severe weather is in the forecast:

Watch the radar. A long line approaching from the west or northwest, especially one bowing outward, is your cue to finish outdoor plans early. The line moves fast, often 40โ€“60 mph (64โ€“96 km/h).

Get indoors before it arrives. Don't wait for the rain โ€” the most dangerous winds hit right at the leading edge with the gust front and shelf cloud. Move to an interior room away from windows.
