If you've ever seen news footage of Boston buried under three feet of snow, waves crashing over a New England seawall, or New York City brought to a standstill by a blizzard, there's a good chance you were looking at the work of a nor'easter. These sprawling coastal storms are the East Coast's signature winter weather event, capable of dumping historic snowfall, flooding shorelines, and knocking out power for days.
Despite the name, a nor'easter isn't a single kind of cloud or a rare freak event β it's a large-scale storm system that develops in a very particular place, off the eastern seaboard of the United States, and behaves in a very predictable and destructive way. Here's what actually makes one, why it's called that, and what to do when the forecast starts warning about it.
The name comes from the direction of the strongest winds. As these storms move up the coast, they spin counterclockwise, which drives powerful winds in from the northeast β straight off the Atlantic and onto land. "Nor'easter" is simply a contraction of "northeaster," the old mariner's term for a wind blowing from that quarter. So the name describes the wind, not the storm's path or where it's headed.
Those onshore northeast winds are exactly why nor'easters are so damaging near the coast: they pile ocean water against the shore, whip up huge waves, and carry endless Atlantic moisture inland to fall as snow or rain.
A nor'easter is born from a clash of air masses along the East Coast, usually between fall and early spring. Three ingredients come together:
1. A sharp temperature contrast. Frigid, dry air spilling south from Canada meets warm, moist air over the Gulf Stream β the band of warm ocean current running just off the Atlantic coast. The bigger the temperature difference, the more energy the storm can tap.
2. A pool of warm ocean water. The Gulf Stream keeps sea-surface temperatures relatively mild even in winter, feeding heat and moisture into the developing low-pressure center like fuel into an engine.
3. A steering jet stream. A dip in the jet stream overhead helps a coastal low-pressure area spin up and then guides it northeast along the coastline, often deepening it explosively along the way.
When these line up, a low-pressure center forms near the Carolinas or off the Mid-Atlantic and tracks up toward New England. As it strengthens, the counterclockwise circulation throws moisture back over the cold air to the northwest β which is why the heaviest snow usually falls well inland of the storm's center.
The reason nor'easters get so much attention is that they combine several hazards into one storm:

Temperatures during a nor'easter usually hover close to freezing β around 30β34Β°F (-1 to 1Β°C) β which is exactly why the rain-versus-snow question is so delicate. A degree or two warmer and it's a cold, windy rainstorm; a degree or two colder and the same moisture becomes a paralyzing snowstorm.
Nor'easters are most common from October through April, peaking in the dead of winter when the temperature contrast between Canadian cold and Gulf Stream warmth is greatest. Some of the most famous β the Blizzard of 1978, the "Storm of the Century" in 1993, and the January 2018 "bomb cyclone" β struck between January and March. They can occur outside winter too, bringing wind and heavy rain rather than snow.
When a nor'easter strengthens especially fast β its central pressure dropping at least 24 millibars in 24 hours β meteorologists call it a bomb cyclone, a sign the storm is intensifying explosively.
Because nor'easters are forecast days in advance, you usually have time to prepare. The most important steps:
Before the storm: Stock up on food, water, and medications for several days; charge devices and have flashlights ready in case of outages; fill your car's fuel tank; and bring loose outdoor items inside so the wind can't turn them into projectiles.
During the storm: Stay off the roads β plows and emergency crews need clear streets, and whiteout conditions make driving genuinely dangerous. If you lose heat, close off unused rooms to conserve warmth, and never run a generator or grill indoors.
A nor'easter is a large coastal storm, named for its punishing northeast winds, that forms when cold Canadian air collides with warm, moist Atlantic air over the Gulf Stream. It can deliver blizzard snow, coastal flooding, and damaging wind all at once, and its exact track decides whether a city gets buried or just soaked.
