After a big thunderstorm has rolled through, the underside of the sky sometimes turns into something out of a dream โ a ceiling of smooth, drooping pouches, like a field of hanging balloons or bubble wrap turned inside out, often glowing gold or bruised purple in the late-day sun. These are mammatus clouds, and they're among the most photographed and least understood shapes in the sky.
The name comes from the Latin mamma, meaning udder or breast, for the obvious reason โ they look like rounded lobes sagging from the cloud base. Despite their menacing appearance, they aren't a storm arriving. They're usually a storm leaving.
Almost every cloud you see forms from air rising. Mammatus are the rare exception: they form from air sinking. They hang from the underside of a thunderstorm's anvil โ the wide, flat top that spreads out when a storm's updraft hits the stratosphere and can't rise any further.
That anvil is packed with ice crystals and is colder and denser than the clear air just below it. When pockets of that heavy, cloud-filled air sink into the drier air underneath, they push downward in rounded lobes instead of the flat base a normal cloud has. As the sinking air descends, its ice crystals begin to evaporate, which cools the air further and helps it keep sinking โ reinforcing those distinct bulging pouches. Each lobe can be a mile (1.6 km) or more across, and a field of them can stretch for hundreds of miles.
This is the big misconception. Mammatus are a sign that a strong thunderstorm exists nearby, but they hang from the anvil, which spreads out ahead of and behind the storm's core. Most often you see them on the back side of a storm that has already passed, or off to the side of one. They indicate the storm was powerful enough to build a big anvil โ not that severe weather is bearing down on you.
That said, they should keep you alert rather than complacent. They only form beneath vigorous storms, and a storm strong enough to make good mammatus is a storm strong enough to have produced hail, damaging winds, or even a tornado somewhere along its path. So enjoy the view, but keep an eye on the sky and your radar to know where the storm's dangerous core actually is.
