The heart of Tornado Alley

Few places on Earth see more violent tornadoes than Oklahoma City. Sitting in the middle of the Great Plains at the core of Tornado Alley, the metro is where cold, dry air from the Rockies, warm Gulf moisture, and a powerful spring jet stream collide to produce the planet's most explosive thunderstorms. Severe weather isn't an occasional event here β€” it's a defining feature of life.

Tornado season

From April through June, the OKC area is a global hotspot for supercells and tornadoes. The region has been struck by some of the most violent storms ever recorded, including the catastrophic May 3, 1999 tornado and the deadly May 2013 Moore tornado. Storm sirens, weather radios, and safe rooms are simply part of the culture.

Hot summers, variable winters

Summers are hot, windy, and often dry, with highs in the mid-90sΒ°F (around 35Β°C) and a near-constant prairie wind. Winters are changeable: mild stretches can flip to bitter cold and ice within a day as Arctic fronts sweep down the open plains, and disruptive ice storms are a bigger threat than heavy snow.

Oklahoma City averages about 37 inches (940 mm) of rain a year, much of it from spring and early-summer thunderstorms, with wind a near-constant feature of the wide-open landscape.

The tornado capital

Oklahoma City lies at the dead center of Tornado Alley and has been struck by more tornadoes than almost any city on Earth, including the violent EF5s of May 1999 and May 2013. Spring is the peak, when Gulf moisture, the dry line, and Plains wind shear combine explosively.

Beyond tornadoes, the climate is one of extremes: scorching, windy summers past 100Β°F (38Β°C), sharp winter cold with ice storms, and some of the strongest sustained winds of any US metro. The wide-open terrain lets weather build and move fast, and huge daily temperature swings are routine.
