Sitting in the middle of the Great Plains at the core of Tornado Alley, the metro is where cold, dry air from the Rockies, warm Gulf moisture, and a powerful spring jet stream collide to produce the planet's most explosive thunderstorms. Severe weather isn't an occasional event here — it's a defining feature of life.
From April through June, the OKC area is a global hotspot for supercells and tornadoes. The region has been struck by some of the most violent storms ever recorded, including the catastrophic May 3, 1999 tornado and the deadly May 2013 Moore tornado. Storm sirens, weather radios, and safe rooms are simply part of the culture.
Summers are hot, windy, and often dry, with highs in the mid-90s°F (around 35°C) and a near-constant prairie wind. Winters are changeable: mild stretches can flip to bitter cold and ice within a day as Arctic fronts sweep down the open plains, and disruptive ice storms are a bigger threat than heavy snow.
