Atlantic light and gentle seasons

Lisbon basks in a mild Mediterranean climate softened by the Atlantic, which gives Portugal's capital long, sunny, comfortable seasons and some of the most agreeable weather in Europe. The ocean keeps summers from getting too hot and winters from getting cold, while the city's famous clear light draws visitors and artists alike.

Warm, dry, breezy summers

Summers are warm and dry, with July highs around 82°F (28°C), abundant sunshine, and refreshing Atlantic breezes — including the cool "nortada" north wind that often picks up in the afternoons. Genuine heat waves arrive only when hot air pushes in from the Spanish interior, but the coast usually keeps things pleasant.

Mild, wet winters

Winters are mild and rainy, with January highs around 59°F (15°C), frost essentially unknown, and the bulk of the year's rain falling between November and March. The season is green and gentle, with sunny days mixed among the Atlantic fronts that roll in off the ocean.

Lisbon averages about 30 inches (760 mm) of rain a year, almost all outside summer, and enjoys exceptional sunshine — well over 2,800 hours annually. Spring and autumn are long, warm, and ideal for exploring the city's hills and viewpoints.

Lisbon is one of Europe's sunniest capitals, with a mild Mediterranean climate softened by the Atlantic. Summers are warm and reliably dry, but the cool ocean and the northerly 'nortada' wind that picks up on summer afternoons keep the heat from becoming oppressive.
