A city ruled by light and dark

More than temperature, the defining feature of Helsinki's weather is daylight — or the lack of it. Perched at 60° north on the Gulf of Finland, the Finnish capital lives through one of the most extreme light cycles of any European capital. Around the winter solstice in December, the sun struggles up for barely six hours and never climbs far above the horizon, bathing the city in a long blue twilight Finns call kaamos. Six months later, midsummer brings nearly nineteen hours of daylight, and the sky never fully darkens — the famous "white nights" when people picnic and swim at midnight.

Winter: long, dark, and snow-covered

Helsinki winters are cold but, thanks to the Baltic Sea, milder than its latitude suggests — Anchorage and the southern tip of Greenland sit on the same parallel. From December through March, highs hover around 27–30°F (−2 to −1°C), and snow typically blankets the city for three to four months. The sea itself often freezes near the coast, and in the harshest winters icebreakers keep the shipping lanes open. The cold is damp and penetrating rather than the dry, sharp chill of continental Russia further east.

The moderating Baltic

That nearby sea is the reason Helsinki's climate is gentler than the deep-freeze interior of Finland. Water holds onto warmth long after the land has cooled, so autumn lingers and the first hard frosts arrive later on the coast than inland. The trade-off comes in spring: the cold sea keeps the city cool well into May, and the ice can take its time melting even as the days grow long and bright.

A brief, treasured summer

Finns take their short summer seriously. From June through August, highs settle around a comfortable 70°F (21°C), and heatwaves can push into the upper 70s or low 80s°F (25–28°C) — Helsinki's all-time record is about 91°F (33°C). With endless daylight and pleasantly warm seas, this is when the city empties toward summer cottages and the archipelago. It doesn't last: by September the light fades fast, autumn turns dark and rainy, and the long wait for the next summer begins again.
