Sun-baked summers in the cradle of Europe

Athens has one of the hottest, driest climates of any European capital β€” a Mediterranean climate pushed to its sunny extreme. Sheltered by surrounding mountains and sprawling across a basin, the city soaks up intense summer heat and abundant sunshine, with rain confined almost entirely to the mild winter months.

Intense, dry heat

Summers are long, hot, and rainless, with July highs around 92Β°F (33Β°C) and heat waves that regularly soar past 100Β°F (38Β°C). The dense, low basin traps heat as an urban heat island, making Athens nights notably warm. Relief often comes from the "meltemi," a dry northerly wind that sweeps across the Aegean in summer.

Mild, wet winters

Winters are mild and the only real wet season, with January highs around 55Β°F (13Β°C) and most of the year's modest rainfall arriving between November and March. Frost is uncommon in the city and snow is rare, though cold snaps can occasionally dust the surrounding hills.

Athens is dry, averaging only about 16 inches (410 mm) of rain a year, almost none of it in summer. Spring and autumn are warm and pleasant, the best windows for visiting before the full force of summer heat sets in.

Attic heat and the meltemi

Athens has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate and is one of the hottest capitals in Europe, with July and August highs regularly past 95Β°F (35Β°C) and heat waves that can top 104Β°F (40Β°C), intensified by the sprawling city's concrete basin ringed by mountains.

Relief comes from the 'meltemi,' a dry northerly wind that sweeps down the Aegean in summer, cooling things and clearing the air. Winters are mild and the wettest season, with rain concentrated from November to March and only rare, brief snow. Spring and autumn are the ideal times to explore the ancient city.
