Heat Advisory vs Excessive Heat Warning: What's the Difference?

When a dangerous heat wave bears down, the National Weather Service issues alerts to warn you โ€” but the wording matters. A "heat advisory" is not the same as an "excessive heat warning," and knowing which one is in effect tells you how serious the threat really is. Heat is the deadliest weather hazard in the United States most years, killing more people than hurricanes, tornadoes, or floods, so these alerts are worth understanding.
